What are the origins of Judaism?
Judaism originated around 3500 years ago (1812 BC) in the Middle East regions of Canaan (now known as Israel and Palestinian territories).
What is the History of Judaism?
Judaism is the oldest of the world's four biggest monotheistic religions and is the original of the three Abrahamic faiths. The history of Judaism initiated with the covenant between God and Abraham around 1812 BC during the Bronze Age. Abraham was a prominent personage of the Jewish religion and was known as the Patriarch to the Jewish peoples. Canaan became a powerful nation with Kings such as David, Solomon and Saul. Under God's guidance and will the First temple In Jerusalem was constructed (by Solomon) and this was where Jewish worshipping took place.
After the death of Solomon, the two separated kingdoms of Israel and Judah introduced a variety of different kings which after several hundred years which resulted in the a rapid domination of idolatry. (A worship of idols or images that aren't God). God, however did not take this lightly and allowed Babylon to overpower the city and destroy the First temple. He then banished its people to Babylon for seventy years.
Around 538 BCE, the Jews returned and built the Second Temple of Jerusalem.
It however only remained intact for about 420 years until it was desecrated by the Roman Empire, Titus in 70 CE. Along with the temple, many Jews were exiled and scattered elsewhere.
In 100-700 CE, the Hebrew Bible was established and the compilation the rules for the Jewish calender, Mishna (definitive code of Judaism) and Talmud (written scriptures) were brought to life.
The Holocaust (1939-45) persecuted 6 million people were in attempt to wipe out the Jewish population. This impacted the religion of culture of the Jewish population tremendously and as a result of this, the Jewish religion is globally distributed and of course has decreased in numbers. Shortly after the Holocaust in 1947, the United Nations undertook the establishment of the State of Israel which is commonly known as Palestine.
These events were influential and impacted the Jewish religion so greatly that there were vast decreases of numbers. Also instead of worshipping and gathering at a central temple, they evolved in to split groups that learnt and worshipped in small local synagogues.
